Inaugural Post IS101

 Hello All,

My name is Rafael, I'm currently a full-time student at the College of Southern Nevada (CSN), to which one of my classes is IS101.

So far CSN has treated me well, with 3 campuses to choose from it is incredibly convenient for people beginning their own higher education journey with many amenities and services to choose from I would without a doubt recommend this college for anyone even if their aspirations lie past that of a 2-year degree/ trade. As for the class to which this blog pertains to, IS101 has granted me a greater depth of knowledge to Information Systems, despite my own previous experience using computers and mobile devices. My professor, Mr. Albert Wu encourages discipline, attention to detail and work ethic that goes above and beyond, I certainly believe this class will bolster my professional productivity as I transition from student to my future career of choice.

A good example of an element my IS101 class has encouraged me to revisit can be found in our virtual "LabSim" titled "2.1.8 Peripheral Device Facts". Within this brief handout of information, I learned that not only are keyboard, mouses and webcams considered peripheral devices to desktop computers (and laptops for that matter) but scanners, printers and even external storage devices. Peripheral devices also rely on hardware specific "Drivers" which enable the host device the ability to "Read them".

With all this in mind I'm motivated to continue to challenge my prior knowledge of Information Systems, with a formalized setting.

Best,

Rafa

  1. I'm very pleased to hear just the first few weeks of IS101-3003, Spring 2026 has already granted you greater depth of knowledge to Information System, Rafa :-)

Thank you for sharing how you perceive me: encouraging discipline, attention to detail, and work ethic that go above and beyond ^_^

I see you are a focused and hard working young man who is evolving into a leader!

  2. Rafael, I’ve run into my fair share of printers in office settings too. Sometimes it really is the wrong driver or connector that causes the issue. I’ve had headaches getting devices onto the right Wi-Fi band, whether 2.4 or 5G. It’s honestly a pain sometimes. Peripherals are one of those things we assume will just work until they don’t. The lab makes you realize there’s more going on. In the office, that knowledge would have saved me some time. It’s practical stuff for anyone working with tech. I’m sure you’ll run into it again.

  3. Hey Rafa, I agree with you that CSN having a lot of campuses is very convenient. I also saw that they are making a new one near or around Centennial Hills, just thought I'd share that. I also liked that you mentioned learning "discipline, attention to detail, and work ethic that goes above and beyond." from Professor Wu, because I agree that these 3 things are extremely important. I think we are lucky that we learn not only the academic stuff from this class, but also the practical life skills, mindset, and habits to help us survive the 'real world' outside of school.

  4. Hi Rafa, thanks for sharing your experience. I agree that CSN is a great place to start college since it’s convenient and offers a lot of resources. It’s also interesting how IS101 helps us learn more about technology even if we already have experience with computers. I didn’t realize how many devices are considered peripherals either. It’s cool that the class helps us understand how everything works together.

  5. Hi Rafael, I’m also really satisfied with all the resources and facilities CSN offers, it definitely makes learning more convenient and enjoyable. I found your point about peripheral devices super interesting too; it’s amazing how many everyday devices rely on drivers to work properly.

  6. Hello Rafael, IS101 has also taught me more than I thought I would learn about the internet, computers, and Microsoft word. It's a great class that requires the students to have discipline. I didn't previously know that items like mouses and keyboards were referred to as "Peripheral Devices".

  7. I totally agree with CSN having 3 campuses to choose from and different professors to have in IS-101 but here we are ended up in a blog post assignment by Prof. Wu. Funny how that works. It's also worth to mention that our professor provides discipline and I think he's the best at giving us examples of how the real world works. More power to your journey and what is that aircraft in the background?

  9. Hi Rafael. It is encouraging to hear that you are willing to improve your knowledge in IS101. One thing that makes this class hard is that you must understand what connectors connect to what devices. I would like to know, what career are you pursuing?

  10. Rafael, your transition to higher education at CSN is marked by a sophisticated shift from casual computer use to a formalized understanding of Information Systems, particularly through your technical realization that peripheral device functionality is contingent upon specific hardware drivers and rigorous attention to detail.

  11. Rafael, yes it truly is underrated the multiple avenues of learning destinations that are available for a student as most universities are mainly based in one area. Also you reiterating of peripheral devices just helped me learn such a thing as well thank you.

  12. Hey Rafael, I'm glad to see that we know that Professor Wu only wants the best for us. Regarding LabSim it took a year to update my drivers for my processor, in order to keep firmware up to date and make it be smoother for gaming. It is necessary for example when like on a long paddle boat everybody is rowing together and making the ride smooth.

  13. Hi Rafa, this class definitely helps us review our knowledge in computer systems. I also agree that CSN is a good college. I think people often look down upon community colleges but so far, my learning experiences has been great. I'm also enjoying not having to pay a ton of tuition like I would have to if I immediately transferred to a 4-year college. Good luck with your college journey!

  14. Hey Rafa, yeah CSN is a great choice for higher education, and yes having to choose between 3 campuses is very convenient, especially nowadays with gas prices and having to drive far to attend class. It's interesting that this class is only one day a week but it feels a lot more than that given the amount of work, and yes it does take discipline and attention to detail, which is something I'm currently working on. Best of luck towards your journey through CSN!

  15. Hi Rafael, I didn't even consider the convenience of multiple campuses. I have been to the other campuses, but I have only taken classes at West Charleston campus. Having a full-time schedule is a heavy load but graduation will come much quicker then only taking a couple of classes at a time.

  16. Hello Rafael, I totally agree CSN offers a lot of flexibility and opportunity with the three campuses. I attend all three campuses due to my schedule but I am very grateful that was even an option.

  17. Hello, Rafael same CSN has been a good experience for me in seeking my associate. Although CSN has 3 campuses, I have only attended 1, which is the West Charleston campus. So far, this campus has treated me well.

  18. Hello Rafael. Wow, I have never met someone who have brought up taking advantage of 3 campuses. That is actually very convenient, for instance if your job is in near another campus, etc. Very eye opening!

  19. Hi Rafa, it's great that CSN has so many campuses—that turns out to be really convenient. Plus, it's good that this class is instilling some discipline in you.

  20. Hello Rafael, I was also impressed with CSN having 3 campuses, and I too find it very convenient. Having one so close to home makes it incredibly easy to attend classes in person, I barely even have to worry about traffic.

  22. Hi Rafael, your post shows a solid understanding of how IS101 is expanding your existing computer knowledge. Your explanation of peripheral devices and drivers is clear and accurate, especially how you connected them to the LabSim. It’s good to see you tying the course content to your future career goals.

  26. Hi Rafa, I liked how you talked about CSN and all the opportunities it offers. It’s true that having three campuses is very helpful for students. Although it’s kind of funny for me because all three are about 30 minutes without traffic away from my house, so I usually go to the North Las Vegas and Charleston campuses, and I’m planning to take a semester at the Henderson one just to check it out… since they’re all 30 minutes away anyway haha. I also agree that this class helps us develop discipline and attention to detail, not just technical knowledge.
Good luck on your academic journey!
